Class of 2012 Alumna, Katie Orth, accepted an anchor position at KMID/KPEJ.
Katie Orth, Class of 2012, was named the KMID/KPEJ evening news anchor for ABC News in Midland, Texas. She and Horace Brown co-host the 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts, Monday through Friday.

Over the course of her career, Katie has covered many inspiring stories, but her feature on a young athlete named Austin Weed had such a strong impact on her that it left her crying happy tears.

“Austin was a senior in high school when he was in a tragic accident,” Katie said. “It resulted in the loss of one of his legs. However, ten months later, the positive-spirited athlete was back on the basketball court—sporting his prosthetic—shooting triples.”

Having attended FBCA for almost her entire childhood, Katie made meaningful relationships with many of her teachers.

“I had so many inspirational teachers at FBCA,” she said. “There are too many to name really, but I am so grateful for every single one of those teachers. They are all wise, and I miss talking one-on-one with them. The intimate student-teacher relationships at FBCA is something to appreciate. That was one of my favorite things about the school.”

A native of Sugar Land, Katie misses living close to her best friends and family, but she also misses the restaurants.

“Houston has the best food,” she said. “I'm not ashamed to admit that I've asked my mom to bring queso with her on a west Texas visit.”

Fort Bend Christian Academy high school broadcast team, Eagles on the Air, films and announces big games and special events on and off campus. Katie’s advice to the aspiring reporters on the broadcast team is to persevere and be kind.

“You will have to put in your time at the bottom,” Katie said. “Be willing to work overtime, network and always go out of your way to make someone else's day. This industry is very unique. But, really in any industry to be a positive light to others will always be in style.”

Katie attended Texas A&M University, where she graduated with a degree in Communications and Journalism.
