26 Hours, 26.2 Miles

The Dailey family has taken quarantine fitness to the next level.
The marathon challenge was to run one mile per hour, for 26 hours. The runners included parents, Jason and Diane, children Kendall, Ashlyn, Payton, Taylor, and friends Noor, Hudson, and Jack.

Taylor Dailey, a senior cross country and track athlete at FBCA, shared that they began at noon on April 16 and ran until they had completed 26.2 miles. The group started their runs right on the hour, so 10 minutes before they laced up their shoes and got ready to go. 

Taylor ran miles 1 through 13 at an impressive 7 to 8-minute pace while Jason and Diane kept at a 9 to 10-minute pace. Kendall, a 7th grader at FBCA, ran 18 miles before taking a quick break but joined the group again in time to finish with a total of 22 miles. Mom, Diane, was the motivation to keep going throughout the run; however, at around 2 a.m. and mile 15, the group began to feel the aches and pains.

“I started crashing by mile 15 at 2 a.m., and everyone was around a 10-10:30 minute pace... my hip flexor was not having it anymore, and everyone was starting to feel the pain, especially the effects of no sleep,” said Taylor. 

At 6 a.m., they began again! Taylor shared that the last five miles were the hardest, but entirely worth it. She ended up running mile 26 at 2 p.m. on April 17 in 7:05 minutes! Homemade medals were awarded at the finish line for their hard work and determination.

“It was definitely an experience since we had to stay awake all night, but was cool since we ran through sunset and sunrise,” shared Taylor. “We ran through our neighborhood at night with some headlamps and music and would spend the minutes waiting for the next hour being delirious. We did a couple of fast food runs in between our hours (which totally helped us run) and ran one mile at the park. I have never stayed up all night, and especially not to run, but I can definitely say I completed a tough challenge.”
