FBCA One-Act Play Places Third at TAPPS District Competition

The Fort Bend Christian Academy One-Act Play placed 3rd at the TAPPS Division 1 District 4 One-Act Play Competition. This performance, “The Taste of Sunrise” by Suzan Zeder, is a tale of two worlds, Deafness and Hearing.
This play has brought two departments together. The FBCA American Sign Language department, led by Tony Slate and Elyse DeBuck, and the Theatre department, led by Lana Thompson, have been working together to create a performance of significant impact. The play centers around the life of a young deaf boy named Tuc who struggles to find his voice. His journey leads him to discover sign language, which opens our character’s eyes to his true identity and opens our audience’s eyes to the history of Deaf culture and the beauty of American Sign Language.

At the competition, Acting Awards went to Jessica Crocker, Sarah Stubbs, Elizabeth Walker, Addison McMillen and Abigail Preng. Also awarded was Grace Fiore for Technical Crew.

“The performance by our cast and crew for "The Taste of Sunrise" was absolutely one of the most breathtaking and brilliant performances I have ever seen,” shared FBCA Director of Fine Arts, Robert Sanders.

“Mrs. Lana Thompson's vision and direction for "The Taste of Sunrise" created a natural vehicle for our students to understand and embrace how we are called to surrender our talents to God and for His glory. Mrs. Thompson has given our students a means to engage culture by selecting plays like "The Taste of Sunrise" that combine drama students and ASL into the performance. With the collaboration of Ms. Elyse DeBuck & Mr. Tony Slate, our ASL teachers, they have engaged culture by creating opportunities for our students to see how we are made in God’s image and that we are made by God to build and create. It has been said, ‘we can’t understand truth without art.’ Thank you, Mrs. Thompson, for giving our students that truth within art.”

This is the second time in FBCA history that the school has put on a shadow performance both for the school and Deaf community. Join us for one of our performances on Wednesday, December 2nd, with shows starting at 7 & 8:30 p.m. in the Fort Bend Christian Academy North Campus gym, 1250 Seventh St., Sugar Land, TX 77478. We look forward to sharing this special evening with our hearing and Deaf audiences!
